MLA 9th

MLA (Modern Language Association) 9th edition is an author-page number referencing style requiring an in-text citation within the text of your document and a related entry in a works cited at the end of your document.

Web page - works cited

Author: When the author is also the publisher, omit the author element and start with the title of the web page.

Web page title: The "web page title" is in quotation marks and title case (capitalise the first letter of each major word).

Website title: The Website Title is in italics and title case (capitalise the first letter of each major word). 

URLs: Use a permalink if possible and omit http://www or https:///www.

If the URL is very long, shorten it to the host information, e.g. go.galegroup.com/ps

No date: If there is no date, add the date accessed, e.g. Accessed 1 Nov. 2024.

Web page - in-text citations

Parenthetical citation: When you use another person’s ideas or words in your text, include the author’s name and page number/s in brackets, generally at the end of the sentence, e.g. ... education is a key factor (Wall 25).

Citation in prose: When you use the author’s name as part of a sentence (generally at the beginning of a sentence), include the page number in brackets at the end of the sentence, e.g. Thomas Jones discussed the appropriateness of using wet towelling ... (2).

Page numbers: When no page numbers or any other numbering is given, then no numbering is added to the citation. If there are section and/or paragraph numbers, then these can be added.

Parenthetical citation

Note: Add a comma after the author's name when including a chapter, section, paragraph, or line number.

William Blake's artistic flair was apparent from the age of ten (Vultee et al., sec. 1, par. 3). He honed his talent for stipple engraving in his twenties (sec. 2, par. 1).

Citation in prose

Vultee et al. describe William Blake as having artistic flair from the age of ten (sec. 1, par. 3). He honed his talent for stipple engraving in his twenties (sec. 2, par. 1).

Use the name of the group as it appears in your reference list. However, the group name can be shortened to a noun phrase in parenthetical citations.

Author and Publisher the same: When the author is also the publisher, use the title of the web page in quotation marks (shorten to a noun phrase).

Parenthetical citation

… exporting New Zealand seafood products to over 80 countries (Invest New Zealand). 

... leader in food production and exporting around the world ("Big Picture").

Citation in prose

Invest New Zealand maintained to be exporting quality food and beverage products to over 120 countries.

"Big Picture" proclaims to be exporting to over 80 countries of New Zealand's top quality seafood products.
