MLA 9th

MLA (Modern Language Association) 9th edition is an author-page number referencing style requiring an in-text citation within the text of your document and a related entry in a works cited at the end of your document.

Report - works cited

Author: If the author/organisation is also the publisher, omit the author at the beginning and start with the title of the report. 

Report title: The Report Title is in italics and title case (capitalise the first letter of each major word).

No date: If there is no date, add the date accessed, e.g. Accessed 1 Nov. 2024.

Publisher: If there are copublishers, add a slash between the publishers, e.g. Ministry of Education / Water Safety New Zealand.

When the report is written and published by the same organisation, omit the author, and place the title in the author's position.

Report - in-text citations

Parenthetical citation: When you use another person’s ideas or words in your text, include the author’s name and page number/s in brackets, generally at the end of the sentence, e.g. ... education is a key factor (Wall 25).

Citation in prose: When you use the author’s name as part of a sentence (generally at the beginning of a sentence), include the page number in brackets at the end of the sentence, e.g. Thomas Jones discussed the appropriateness of using wet towelling ... (2).

Page numbers: When no page numbers or any other numbering is given, then no numbering is added to the citation. If there are section and/or paragraph numbers, then these can be added.

Parenthetical citation

... with the lack of coverage of arts and culture this has led to a breakdown of trust between media and the artist (Tan and Wenley 10)

Citation in prose

Glenys Merrifield discusses the consequences of errors regarding English language testing for the health sector and the public (1).

Rosabel Tan and James Wenley talked about the national deficit of the arts and culture media coverage and proposed key strategies for investment (13).

Use the name of the group as it appears in your reference list. However, the group name can be shortened to a noun phrase in parenthetical citations.

Parenthetical citation

Schools varied significantly in how they used National Standards to describe student achievement and how they presented this information in their reports (Maths Technology 21).

... as shown in this report (New Zealand Sign 23).

Citation in prose

Maths Technology reported that there were notable differences among schools in how they applied National Standards (21). 

The New Zealand Sign Language Board report discusses the need to prioritise the planning and identification regarding the use of documentation for recording (12).

When the author is also the publisher, use the title of the report in italics (shorten to a noun phrase).

Parenthetical citation

The report indicated that there would be a marked increase in the number of over 65-year-olds remaining in the workforce (Business 20).

... the need for community policing (From Wannabes 21).

Citation in prose

The Business of Ageing report stated that employers should be making the most of the baby boomers' expertise and experience (3). 

In the From Wannabes report, participants believed that a lack of community pride, a culture of poverty, and limited community action were interconnected (20).
