Culture Collections

The University’s Cultural Collections repositories house a rich range of material relevant to Fine Arts study and research. 

University of Auckland Art Collection

The University of Auckland Art Collection is a significant collection of artworks on permanent display and for research, study and teaching. It includes major works by significant artists from Aotearoa, including those associated with the University. 

Special Collections

Holdings in Special Collections in Te Herenga Mātauranga Whānui | General Library include: 

  • Fine Arts archives
    Archives relating primarily to the Auckland art scene and the work of artists associated with the Elam School of Fine Arts. Includes an extensive collection of art ephemera arranged by artist and gallery. 
  • Artists’ Book Collection
    Unique, hand-made, or limited-edition books, many made by Elam staff and alumni. 
  • New Zealand Illustrators Collection
    Nearly 200 books and magazines from the 1890s-1990s with text and dust jacket illustrations by New Zealand artists and illustrators.

TV and Radio

Archived TV and Radio broadcasts, and streaming content, including news, current affairs and arts programmes from the mid-1960s and Māori TV programmes from the 1980s. Search TV and Radio.

Auckland Art Gallery | Toi o Tāmaki

Auckland Art Gallery holds a large and significant permanent collection of New Zealand art. Alongside historic, modern, and contemporary New Zealand art, the collection includes outstanding works by Māori and Pacific Island artists, as well as international paintings, sculptures and prints ranging in date from the 11th century to the present day.

    More than 17500 works are held. In addition to this there are also archives and other resources to explore.

    A joint project by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu.
