Staff guide: Add a Library subject guide to Canvas

Step-by-step instructions to add a full subject guide or content from a subject guide to your Canvas course using the Library Resources app in Canvas.

What are Library subject guides?

Library subject guides are web pages developed by library staff to help students find information resources in their discipline, including databases, journals, books, collections, archives and more. Explore subject guides.

How can Library subject guides help your students?

Library subject guides are helpful for:

  • Students starting to do independent research with discipline-specific databases.
  • Finding different types of information sources, e.g. case law, pharmacology reference material, music scores, business case studies, statistics, maps and more.
  • Discovering Library collections, especially our unique New Zealand, Māori and Pacific resources.
  • Students doing research outside their main subject area.

Embed a guide in Canvas using the Library resources app

Using the Library resources app in Canvas, you can embed a full subject guide, a page (or tab within a guide) or a content box of resources into a Page, Module or Assignment.

Note: You can also select to add a single database or a list of Databases to your page. If you choose to add a list of databases, please be aware that this is a selection of databases listed in the subject guides, and subject tagging may differ from our complete list of Library Databases.

We suggest adding the database box from the appropriate subject guide to add a list of relevant subject-specific databases to your Canvas course.
