OpenAthens FAQs

OpenAthens

We're changing the way we access our online resources. Our new authentication system OpenAthens gives you easy and seamless access to electronic Library resources.

Introducing OpenAthens

OpenAthens is a flexible and secure way for you to access library owned and subscribed resources using Single Sign-On.

  • Stay signed on with Single Sign-On and move seamlessly through databases, electronic journals and e-books.
  • Access online resources directly from search engine results such as Google Search and Google Scholar.
  • Log in directly to large database platforms such as SAGE, Elsevier or ProQuest.
  • Access online resources both on and off campus.

Timeline

OpenAthens replaces our previous system, EzProxy and launches in November 2024.

  • EzProxy links (links that contain 'ezproxy.auckland.ac.nz') will continue to work until the start of Semester Two 2025.
  • Update any EzProxy links before 18 July 2025 to ensure you have seamless access to resources.

Link generator

Use the link generator to convert an old EzProxy link to an OpenAthens link.

Logging on with OpenAthens

  • When accessing online library resources, look for an OpenAthens or Institutional sign-in option.
  • Search for 'University of Auckland' in 'Find your organisation/institution'.
  • You will be directed to the University of Auckland Single Sign-On.

Will OpenAthens give me access to all library resources?

Not all databases and journals have the capacity to support Single Sign-On via OpenAthens. You can continue to access these resources via the library catalogue.
