Database coverage

Many newspaper databases provide access to articles from relatively recent times. To check when database coverage begins;

  • Click on the Title of the database (in the Library catalogue), then
  • Refer to the Details section.

Finding older newspaper articles

If the database does not cover the period you need, there are generally two ways to locate older newspaper articles:

  • Search a news media database that covers the required period
  • Locate print/microfilm newspapers

Historical newspaper databases

      Search separate historical newspaper collections including: 

  • British Library Newspapers
  • Daily Mail Historical Archive
  • The Economist Historical Archive
  • Financial Times Historical Archive
  • The Illustrated London News Historical Archive
  • The Listener Historical Archive
  • Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Burney Newspapers
  • The Sunday Times Historical Archive
  • The Times Digital Archive

Locating newspaper articles not available online

  1. Search for the newspaper title in the Library catalogue (you may also have to search other Libraries available to you, e.g. Auckland Libraries.)
  2. Click on the Title
  3. View the Holdings or Details information to check it includes the newspaper dates you require.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to access print/microfilm copies.
